Wabi Sabi : Kintsugi
Look I
Hand embroidered with sequins, pearls, and chains. Paired with a simple ribbed skirt with complimenting details around the waist. After patterning, sampling, cutting and sewing the vest I intentionally placed sequins boarding the drop stitches and purposeful holes. It is my take on the Wabi Sabi style of ceramics: Kintsugi, the centuries-old technique of repairing broken pottery with gold. I completed the garment with finishing half cables with lines of pearls and wove chain through the hem and neckline.
Look II
The process of producing the knit fabric was creating programs, knitting, and evaluating how to improve the program for a “perfect” result. Through the attempts broken and damaged fabric was plentiful. I threw it aside and went back to work, it then hit me I need to embrace the Wabi Sabi mindset and harness beauty from the fabric that worked so hard to be made, but I neglected. This two piece set started as scraps and became a highlight of the collection.
